Raffle tickets can be purchased by mail and the drawing will be held on June 9, 2012. Winner need not be present to win. Quilt will be shipped free of charge. Here's a little note from the innkeepers of the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast in Joseph, Oregon (almost into Idaho it's so far east & north in Oregon):

If you're a guy and into wildlife, you might just want the 2012 Wallowa Mountain Quilters Guild raffle quilt for your bed or as a blanket on the leather couch in your den.  And the raffle's still on until June 9, 2012, so buy your tickets now!  $1 per ticket or 6 for $5--and you can order them through the mail too.  This year's quilt is a Montana Log Cabin style with black silhouettes of birds, moose, deer, foxes and other wildlife.  Very masculine and very striking.

Gee, might even be a good idea to order some tickets and win this beautiful quilt to give as a present to that man who has everything. . .

If you want to see the quilt in person, come to the 20th Annual Quilt Show!  The show takes place on June 8 & 9, 2012, the same weekend here in Joseph Oregon as the Oregon Mountain Cruise Car Show.

We're all sold out of lodging here at the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast but we're happy to refer you to other inspected and approved Oregon bed and breakfasts of the Oregon B&B Guild.  Belle Peppers Bed and Breakfast in Joseph still has rooms open and carries green lodging certification.  Only 6 miles away, the 1910 Historic Enterprise House Bed and Breakfast is currently full.  See you at the quilt show!

Labor Day Weekend in Eastern Oregon is Time for Juniper Jam!

Thursday, September 1, 2011 by Heather Tyreman
Juniper Jam 2011 at the Wallowa County Fairgrounds in Enterprise Oregon on Saturday of Labor Day Weekend

It's Wednesday before Labor Day Weekend and you're still trying to figure out what to do.  How about a one-tank trip to Eastern Oregon for a great Saturday outdoor concert?  Juniper Jam, the "sweetest little music festival in Eastern Oregon" takes place this year on Saturday, September 3, 2011.  Always the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend.

Don't think of this event as a second class way to spend the weekend.  Some of the region's best and brightest bands are playing this year--including Corn Mash, Fruition, Kevin Jones Band, Sons of Guns, James Dean Kindle and the Eastern Oregon Playboys, Jonathan Warren & the Billy Goats, and Buffalo Death Beam.  Plus, Carolyn Lochert, Simon Tucker and Janis Carper, Al MacLeod, Rodd Ambroson and Chase Nebel.  Some of these folks are famous and some are going to be famous.  Bring you lawn chair and hear them up close in the intimate setting of the Wallowa County Fairgrounds in Enterprise, Oregon!

Here's what's said about Juniper Jam:  Enterprise, Oregon is a small town of less than two thousand people, yet it is the heartbeat of a community brimming with arts and culture, and yes, music. Juniper Jam is a celebration of musical diversity, dedicated to showcasing a variety of musical genres while honoring the song and the songwriter.

You'll need a place to stay while you're here because once the music is done there's more to see and do in Wallowa County.  Consider these three Eastern Oregon members of the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild:

1910 Historic Enterprise House in Enterprise is closest to Juniper Jam and offers convenient walking access to Terminal Gravity Microbrewery (a good place to relax once the music is done for the night).  Want to fly in for the event?  The Enterprise House is easy downhill walking distance from the Enterprise Municipal Airport.

Belle Pepper's Bed and Breakfast is one of your choices in Joseph, about 6 miles away from the Juniper Jam site.  Located one block off Main Street in Joseph, this bed and breakfast is in the 1915 historic McCully Mansion and features many distinctive architectural touches.  Pepper and John welcome guests into their green certified lodging.  Their bed & breakfast is a Green Hotels member and is certified by Green America (formerly Co-op America) and the OBBG Green Lodging program.

The artsy Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast in Joseph also has a regulation surfaced bocce court in the north yard perennial garden.  Located on Main Street in Joseph, Oregon, it's also walking distance to Joseph's restaurants and shops.

Wherever you decide to stay, stay for certain in Wallowa County Oregon over Labor Day Weekend.  Take in the music, the sights, the lake, the mountains, the prairie, the food, the stars. . .need I continue?  See ya here!

Mike's Road Trip Blog reviews Villa Columbia in Hood River

Wednesday, August 10, 2011 by Heather Tyreman

Villa Columbia B&B in Hood River, OR, as posted on Mike's Road Trip blog in August 2011. Columbia River Gorge hotels in Hood River ORVilla Columbia Bed and Breakfast in Hood River, Oregon, was recently featured on Mike's Road Trip.  In the same class as the Columbia River Gorge hotels (really more in the boutique hotel category), Villa Columbia B&B gives you good access to the scenic Columbia Gorge year round and access to Mt. Hood in the winter for skiing.

An excerpt from Mike's blog post:

Breakfast at the Villa Columbia is scrumptious and served in thee-courses.  Local ingredients are often used to create a unique experience that reminded me of being in Europe.  Each morning of my stay I enjoyed a fresh fruit berry parfait with vanilla yogurt.  Some of the other items/dished included:

  • Whole wheat blueberry scone
  • Ham & cheese breakfast calzone
  • Twice baked croissant with cherry compote and chicken sausage
  • Spinach quiche with sliced cantaloupe accompanied with sausage in puff pastry

Throughout the day refreshments are available, from stocked mini-fridges with soda and water, to cookies, fruit (like a fresh bowl of cherries while I was there) and a number of candy dishes…all the comforts of home.

[Editor's note: Villa Columbia is a member of the Oregon B&B Guild's Green Lodging Certification program.]

Mike also provides an excellent short video with views of the inn, the guestrooms and the area, plus a photo album of the inn.  Visit his blog to see it all.  And while you're at it, take a look at the rest of Mike's Road Trip--what an interesting fellow and an interesting mission!

Have I been an Oregon Innkeeper for 8 years already?

Friday, April 1, 2011 by Mary Pellegrini
The Old Parkdale Inn-A Mt Hood Bed and BreakfastOn March 31st, 2003, we arrived in Parkdale and began our journey as innkeepers of the Old Parkdale Inn, a Mt. Hood Bed and Breakfast.  It was something I had dreamed about doing for quite awhile and some days I still pinch myself and some days I ask myself what am I doing!

Today I begin my 9th year.  My, time certainly flies when we are having fun!  And I am having fun.  Oh, I admit there are days when it gets a little rough, say mid September when we have had a constant turnover of guests experiencing Oregon.  But those guests are amazing and I wouldn't trade them for the world.  Some have become friends, almost family, they have returned so many times.

The Old Parkdale Inn is nestled in the Hood River Valley on the northern slope of Mt. Hood.  We are the perfect base for outdoor adventure and quiet retreats.   Our grounds have been recognized as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat and we look forward to spring and the arrival of the many birds that frequent our feeders.

Located in the heart of the Fruit loop, a scenic 35 mile driving tour past family farms, fruit stands, wineries, and friendly communities, we anxiously await the show of blossoms ready to open in the acres of pears, cherries and apples.

On Blossom Fest Weekend, April 15/16, businesses along the Fruit Loop open after their winter nap and celebrate spring with art shows, music, and of course, food.

Mt. Hood, Pear Blossoms and Bee Hives, a sure sign of Spring in the Hood River ValleyAs a Certified Green Lodging member of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild you can rest assured you will experience accommodations fulfilling your sustainable travel needs.  Our inn has three artistically decorated guest rooms, all with private bath, eco friendly products, a modern kitchen and dining room where we serve up a hearty Northwest culinary breakfast.

Saturday, August 7, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini
Green Technology at the Oregon Museum of Science and IndustryThrough a collaborative effort from the SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), InSpec Group (InSpec), and Portland General Electric (PGE), the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) has installed a solar canopy charging station to service electric cars, e-bikes, and most portable personal electronic devices. The solar charging canopy marks the first such installation in North America aiming to provide a solution for the increasing use of alternative transportation and punctuates the fact that both Portland and Oregon are in the forefront of integration green building, transportation, and renewable energy.  The canopy is now available for public use.

The solar canopy has been installed in the OMSI's south parking lot and is large enough to cover 3 standard-sized parking spaces for automobiles.  It features weatherproof lockers, each with 120V AC outlets, with two of the lockers serving as charging mounts for the SANYO 'eneloop bike' Synergetic Hybrid Bicycle, a pedal-assisted hybrid electric bike.  Additionally, beneath the canopy there is a bicycle rack for bike parking.  The solar panels in the solar canopy have been manufactured and assembled using the ingots and wafers produced in SANYO Solar of Oregon, LLC, located in Salem, Oregon.

Green Lodging at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast

Friday, July 23, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini
Green bed and breakfasts are becoming more and more popular, adding an environmentally conscious twist to the quaint, quiet and natural charm of a traditional B&B.  Interest in Eco Friendly Travel destinations is The Old Parkdale Inn - Green Certified by the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guildon the rise, and a green bed and breakfast can provide a comfortable and guilt-free stop for conscientious travelers.

A bed and breakfast is a quaint alternative to a traditional hotel. It's a cozier experience for travelers, who receive a peaceful night and a meal prepared for you in the morning.  Many eco friendly travelers have found that a green B&B, one in which the house may be LEED-certified, energy efficient, using enviromentally safe products and where the breakfasts served are organic, local, seasonal and sustainable, is certainly the way to travel.  For added solace the inn and surrounding grounds are infused with the sights and sounds of nature.

Forest Springs Bed and Breakfast in Gresham, OR, as a movie set: Take Two!

Monday, May 17, 2010 by Heather Tyreman

Filmmakers and others appreciate the authentic Oregon aspects of some of our Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild member inns.  About a year ago, Patrick Arbuckle of the Forest Springs Bed and Breakfast in Gresham wrote a blog post about a recent experience his inn had with a film crew.   Patrick recently provided an updated post about the film. . .

Patrick Arbuckle

Crew from Pathfinders: In the Company of Strangers at Forest Springs Bed & Breakfast near Portland OregonThe crew returned on May 16th to film a few re-shoots for the film: Pathfinders: In the Company of Strangers (See Below). As before, they treated our property with the utmost respect. If all bodes well, they have a tentative release date for Veterans Day 2010. We look forward to its premiere and wish the Film Makers (Portland Independent Films) all the success in the world.

Hollywood (or at least Portland) made a little visit to our Bed and Breakfast. Michael Conner Humphreys (Young Forest Gump) was our guest during the shoot and together with Portland Independent Films, they shot 3 scenes from their upcoming movie. Pathfinders: In The Company of Strangers is set in WWII England and France. As well as having a featured role in the Movie, Conner directed a few scenes. The Story centers around a volunteer unit of American paratroopers whose mission is to land in the heart of enemy territory, and survive long enough to direct the coming airborne invasion of Normandy. Their only hope for survival lies in remaining undiscovered, successfully marking the drop zones, and holding off the enemy until the ensuing invasion arrives.

The cast and crew were an absolute delight and despite the lights, cables, people, props and general chaos, they left our Bed and Breakfast as they had found it.

Thank you, Patrick!  I know I'm planning on seeing the film not only for the subject and actors, but because I want to see Forest Springs Bed & Breakfast @ Historic Heiney House on the big screen!  If you're an independent film maker or a location scout for a major film maker, don't forget the many historic homes preserved so well by members of the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild.

And if you like to visit places used as filming locations, Forest Springs Bed & Breakfast @ Historic Heiney House in Gresham, Oregon, is as authentic Oregon as one can get.  Plus, Patrick's inn is a leader in our Green Lodging Certification program.   Situated close to Portland but a world away in terms of tranquillity, this bed & breakfast is the perfect Portland Oregon lodging for the traveler who wants the convenience of town but the serenity of the way Portland used to be.

Ashland Bed & Breakfast Network's presentation to the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild meeting

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 by Heather Tyreman
Ashland Oregon Bed & Breakfast Network Educational Committee Innkeeping 101Day Two of the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild Annual Meeting in Ashland Oregon.  One of the presentations today came from Cyd Ropp of The Albion Inn and Art Gallery.  Cyd talked about a new initiative from the Ashland Bed & Breakfast Network:  Innkeeping 101.

The Ashland Bed & Breakfast Network's Education Committee started an educational program in the form of a blog, Innkeeping 101, as partial fulfillment of their educational mission.  However, this blog is a free-for-all.  If you're an innkeeper and would like to add your own bed and breakfast secrets, this could be a forum for you.

So far, you'll find a post about water conversation--something important as green lodging becomes more significant to Oregon ecotourism and travel.   ABBN would like to see more topics covered.  If you'd like to contribute, click on the link to the blog, subscribe to the blog, post your comment.  Once the moderator releases it, it'll be posted.  We hope they'll provide a method for guest bloggers to submit their individual blog posts too.

Ashland Oregon and the Annual Meeting of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild

Monday, March 29, 2010 by Heather Tyreman
Greetings from Ashland Oregon!  Mary Pellegrini and I arrived yesterday evening for the start of the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild Annual Meeting week.  Today's Monday, March 29, 2010, and we started of the day with a great breakfast at the Oak Hill Bed & Breakfast, one of the Ashland Oregon lodging sites supporting the meeting.

Baked Eggs with Matcha Finishing Salt at the Oak Hill Bed and Breakfast Ashland Oregon lodgingIf we weren't here for business we could easily make this a northwest culinary vacation.  Pat & Tom purchased this 5-room bed and breakfast in 1999 and haven't looked back one bit.  This morning Pat thrilled us with fresh pineapple and berries, her specialty herbed baked eggs and some of her fantastic barley flour scones.  Pat's developed her own custom finishing salts--the one today included green tea matcha!

This afternoon is meeting time for the Board of Directors of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild.   We've got plenty on the agenda.  More posts coming!

American Idol Finalists of the Lodging Industry

Wednesday, March 24, 2010 by Heather Tyreman

Here are two things that don't fit together:  "generic" and "bed and breakfast accommodations" Ask any bed and breakfast traveler and they'll tell you.  But, there are people out there who think the old stereotype still exists.  Thanks to Fox News' Paul Eisenberg for helping to clear out the old!

"If your idea of a bed and breakfast experience involves antique furniture, creaky floors, and sharing bathrooms and meals with strangers, well, you have the right idea.

However, this is just one possible B&B experience - the traditional one, if you will - that provides a chance to spend time with like-minded travelers in a quaint and eclectic home away from home. But if you look more closely at the B&B landscape you’ll find your choices are as diverse as a pack of American Idol finalists, ranging from happily staid to contemporary, romantic, and freaky."
--
Paul Eisenberg, "The ABCs of B&Bs", FOXNews.com, March 15, 2010.

As diverse as a pack of American Idol finalists--that's us!  And you can find us right here in Oregon on the new Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild website.  So, what are you looking for in your bed and breakfast accommodations?  Our new website features an in-depth search capability.  You can find inns by (these are just a few examples in each category):
  • Geographic setting (beach? urban?)
  • Architectural style (contemporary? ranch?)
  • Area Activities (birding? wineries? golfing?)
  • Food Service (allergies?  vegan?)
  • Inn Amenities (green lodging certification? business rates?)
  • Policies (children permitted?  not permitted? pet friendly?)
  • Room Amenities (king beds?  steam showers?)
  • Best Suited For (family travel? romantic travel? business travel?)
  • Or you can string together your own set of keywords, price ranges, region or city and find the bed and breakfast accommodations that are best for you.
So, what are you waiting for?  If you want the creaky you can find it here.  If you want the ultra modern you can find it here.  Today's Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild members go toe-to-toe with hotels, motels, and other forms of lodging.  We're proudly not hotels--check into our members' unique inns of Oregon and discover your own favorite styles of bed and breakfast accommodations!
