This Masculine Wildlife Quilt Could Be Yours!

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 by Heather Tyreman

2012 raffle quilt from the Wallowa Mountain Quilters Guild is a Montana log cabin style quilt with silhouettes of wildlife. Raffle tickets can be purchased by mail and the drawing will be held on June 9, 2012. Winner need not be present to win. Quilt will be shipped free of charge. Here's a little note from the innkeepers of the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast in Joseph, Oregon (almost into Idaho it's so far east & north in Oregon):

If you're a guy and into wildlife, you might just want the 2012 Wallowa Mountain Quilters Guild raffle quilt for your bed or as a blanket on the leather couch in your den.  And the raffle's still on until June 9, 2012, so buy your tickets now!  $1 per ticket or 6 for $5--and you can order them through the mail too.  This year's quilt is a Montana Log Cabin style with black silhouettes of birds, moose, deer, foxes and other wildlife.  Very masculine and very striking.

Gee, might even be a good idea to order some tickets and win this beautiful quilt to give as a present to that man who has everything. . .

If you want to see the quilt in person, come to the 20th Annual Quilt Show!  The show takes place on June 8 & 9, 2012, the same weekend here in Joseph Oregon as the Oregon Mountain Cruise Car Show.

We're all sold out of lodging here at the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast but we're happy to refer you to other inspected and approved Oregon bed and breakfasts of the Oregon B&B Guild.  Belle Peppers Bed and Breakfast in Joseph still has rooms open and carries green lodging certification.  Only 6 miles away, the 1910 Historic Enterprise House Bed and Breakfast is currently full.  See you at the quilt show!

Mike's Road Trip Blog reviews Villa Columbia in Hood River

Wednesday, August 10, 2011 by Heather Tyreman

Villa Columbia B&B in Hood River, OR, as posted on Mike's Road Trip blog in August 2011. Columbia River Gorge hotels in Hood River ORVilla Columbia Bed and Breakfast in Hood River, Oregon, was recently featured on Mike's Road Trip.  In the same class as the Columbia River Gorge hotels (really more in the boutique hotel category), Villa Columbia B&B gives you good access to the scenic Columbia Gorge year round and access to Mt. Hood in the winter for skiing.

An excerpt from Mike's blog post:

Breakfast at the Villa Columbia is scrumptious and served in thee-courses.  Local ingredients are often used to create a unique experience that reminded me of being in Europe.  Each morning of my stay I enjoyed a fresh fruit berry parfait with vanilla yogurt.  Some of the other items/dished included:

  • Whole wheat blueberry scone
  • Ham & cheese breakfast calzone
  • Twice baked croissant with cherry compote and chicken sausage
  • Spinach quiche with sliced cantaloupe accompanied with sausage in puff pastry

Throughout the day refreshments are available, from stocked mini-fridges with soda and water, to cookies, fruit (like a fresh bowl of cherries while I was there) and a number of candy dishes…all the comforts of home.

[Editor's note: Villa Columbia is a member of the Oregon B&B Guild's Green Lodging Certification program.]

Mike also provides an excellent short video with views of the inn, the guestrooms and the area, plus a photo album of the inn.  Visit his blog to see it all.  And while you're at it, take a look at the rest of Mike's Road Trip--what an interesting fellow and an interesting mission!

Have I been an Oregon Innkeeper for 8 years already?

Friday, April 1, 2011 by Mary Pellegrini
The Old Parkdale Inn-A Mt Hood Bed and BreakfastOn March 31st, 2003, we arrived in Parkdale and began our journey as innkeepers of the Old Parkdale Inn, a Mt. Hood Bed and Breakfast.  It was something I had dreamed about doing for quite awhile and some days I still pinch myself and some days I ask myself what am I doing!

Today I begin my 9th year.  My, time certainly flies when we are having fun!  And I am having fun.  Oh, I admit there are days when it gets a little rough, say mid September when we have had a constant turnover of guests experiencing Oregon.  But those guests are amazing and I wouldn't trade them for the world.  Some have become friends, almost family, they have returned so many times.

The Old Parkdale Inn is nestled in the Hood River Valley on the northern slope of Mt. Hood.  We are the perfect base for outdoor adventure and quiet retreats.   Our grounds have been recognized as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat and we look forward to spring and the arrival of the many birds that frequent our feeders.

Located in the heart of the Fruit loop, a scenic 35 mile driving tour past family farms, fruit stands, wineries, and friendly communities, we anxiously await the show of blossoms ready to open in the acres of pears, cherries and apples.

On Blossom Fest Weekend, April 15/16, businesses along the Fruit Loop open after their winter nap and celebrate spring with art shows, music, and of course, food.

Mt. Hood, Pear Blossoms and Bee Hives, a sure sign of Spring in the Hood River ValleyAs a Certified Green Lodging member of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild you can rest assured you will experience accommodations fulfilling your sustainable travel needs.  Our inn has three artistically decorated guest rooms, all with private bath, eco friendly products, a modern kitchen and dining room where we serve up a hearty Northwest culinary breakfast.

OMSI Presents Innovative Solar Canopy Charging Station

Saturday, August 7, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini
Green Technology at the Oregon Museum of Science and IndustryThrough a collaborative effort from the SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), InSpec Group (InSpec), and Portland General Electric (PGE), the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) has installed a solar canopy charging station to service electric cars, e-bikes, and most portable personal electronic devices. The solar charging canopy marks the first such installation in North America aiming to provide a solution for the increasing use of alternative transportation and punctuates the fact that both Portland and Oregon are in the forefront of integration green building, transportation, and renewable energy.  The canopy is now available for public use.

The solar canopy has been installed in the OMSI's south parking lot and is large enough to cover 3 standard-sized parking spaces for automobiles.  It features weatherproof lockers, each with 120V AC outlets, with two of the lockers serving as charging mounts for the SANYO 'eneloop bike' Synergetic Hybrid Bicycle, a pedal-assisted hybrid electric bike.  Additionally, beneath the canopy there is a bicycle rack for bike parking.  The solar panels in the solar canopy have been manufactured and assembled using the ingots and wafers produced in SANYO Solar of Oregon, LLC, located in Salem, Oregon.

Forest Springs Bed and Breakfast in Gresham, OR, as a movie set: Take Two!

Monday, May 17, 2010 by Heather Tyreman

Filmmakers and others appreciate the authentic Oregon aspects of some of our Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild member inns.  About a year ago, Patrick Arbuckle of the Forest Springs Bed and Breakfast in Gresham wrote a blog post about a recent experience his inn had with a film crew.   Patrick recently provided an updated post about the film. . .

Crew from Pathfinders: In the Company of Strangers at Forest Springs Bed & Breakfast near Portland OregonThe crew returned on May 16th to film a few re-shoots for the film: Pathfinders: In the Company of Strangers (See Below). As before, they treated our property with the utmost respect. If all bodes well, they have a tentative release date for Veterans Day 2010. We look forward to its premiere and wish the Film Makers (Portland Independent Films) all the success in the world.

Hollywood (or at least Portland) made a little visit to our Bed and Breakfast. Michael Conner Humphreys (Young Forest Gump) was our guest during the shoot and together with Portland Independent Films, they shot 3 scenes from their upcoming movie. Pathfinders: In The Company of Strangers is set in WWII England and France. As well as having a featured role in the Movie, Conner directed a few scenes. The Story centers around a volunteer unit of American paratroopers whose mission is to land in the heart of enemy territory, and survive long enough to direct the coming airborne invasion of Normandy. Their only hope for survival lies in remaining undiscovered, successfully marking the drop zones, and holding off the enemy until the ensuing invasion arrives.

The cast and crew were an absolute delight and despite the lights, cables, people, props and general chaos, they left our Bed and Breakfast as they had found it.

Thank you, Patrick!  I know I'm planning on seeing the film not only for the subject and actors, but because I want to see Forest Springs Bed & Breakfast @ Historic Heiney House on the big screen!  If you're an independent film maker or a location scout for a major film maker, don't forget the many historic homes preserved so well by members of the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild.

And if you like to visit places used as filming locations, Forest Springs Bed & Breakfast @ Historic Heiney House in Gresham, Oregon, is as authentic Oregon as one can get.  Plus, Patrick's inn is a leader in our Green Lodging Certification program.   Situated close to Portland but a world away in terms of tranquillity, this bed & breakfast is the perfect Portland Oregon lodging for the traveler who wants the convenience of town but the serenity of the way Portland used to be.

American Idol Finalists of the Lodging Industry

Wednesday, March 24, 2010 by Heather Tyreman

Here are two things that don't fit together:  "generic" and "bed and breakfast accommodations" Ask any bed and breakfast traveler and they'll tell you.  But, there are people out there who think the old stereotype still exists.  Thanks to Fox News' Paul Eisenberg for helping to clear out the old!

"If your idea of a bed and breakfast experience involves antique furniture, creaky floors, and sharing bathrooms and meals with strangers, well, you have the right idea.

However, this is just one possible B&B experience - the traditional one, if you will - that provides a chance to spend time with like-minded travelers in a quaint and eclectic home away from home. But if you look more closely at the B&B landscape you’ll find your choices are as diverse as a pack of American Idol finalists, ranging from happily staid to contemporary, romantic, and freaky."

Paul Eisenberg, "The ABCs of B&Bs", FOXNews.com, March 15, 2010.

As diverse as a pack of American Idol finalists--that's us!  And you can find us right here in Oregon on the new Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild website.  So, what are you looking for in your bed and breakfast accommodations?  Our new website features an in-depth search capability.  You can find inns by (these are just a few examples in each category):
  • Geographic setting (beach? urban?)
  • Architectural style (contemporary? ranch?)
  • Area Activities (birding? wineries? golfing?)
  • Food Service (allergies?  vegan?)
  • Inn Amenities (green lodging certification? business rates?)
  • Policies (children permitted?  not permitted? pet friendly?)
  • Room Amenities (king beds?  steam showers?)
  • Best Suited For (family travel? romantic travel? business travel?)
  • Or you can string together your own set of keywords, price ranges, region or city and find the bed and breakfast accommodations that are best for you.
So, what are you waiting for?  If you want the creaky you can find it here.  If you want the ultra modern you can find it here.  Today's Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild members go toe-to-toe with hotels, motels, and other forms of lodging.  We're proudly not hotels--check into our members' unique inns of Oregon and discover your own favorite styles of bed and breakfast accommodations!

Portland, Oregon. Known for Eco Friendly Travel, Certified Green Lodging and Green Beer

Thursday, March 18, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini

St. Patrick's day is behind us but Green is here year-round in Oregon.  Many Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild members provide Certified Green Lodging.  And at Hopworks Urban Brewery in southeast Portland, the brewpub calls itself an "eco brewpub."

Oregon's Green BrewMany celebrate St. Patrick's Day with green beer, but in Portland, we're not talking the food colored or dyed kind. We’re talking about the organic kind.

Green is no doubt the theme at Hopworks Urban Brewery in southeast Portland.  Not only does it serve all certified organic beer.  It also uses all renewable energy, runs its kettles on biodiesal fuel, and even sits its customers on furniture made from recycled wood.

"We're really the first brew pub to incorporate all aspects of sustainability in our operation," said Christian Ettinger, brewmaster and owner of Hopworks.

Combining green beer with Portland's National Green status and the Green Lodging Certification held by some Portland area B&Bs makes for an authentic green Oregon vacation.

These member inns of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild's Green Certification Program are committed to engaging in practices that promote the sustainability of our planet's natural resources while providing luxurious accommodations and sharing their eco-friendly values.

Hopworks Urban Brewery is not alone in its green brewing.  It joins other "green" breweries like Lauralwood, which back in 2002 became Portland's first ever organic brewery, as well as Root's Brewing Company which was the first brewpub in the city to serve all organic beer.  While you'll find plenty of organic green beer at these pubs, you won't find any green colored beer on this day or any St. Patrick's Day

Over the past year, Forest Springs Bed and Breakfast has seen our business grow in a new and welcome direction. Many of our guests have noted to us that our being a member of the green inspection program of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild was a major factor in their decision to stay with us.  Knowing that we extended this care to our choices of local, fresh and organic ingredients for their breakfast certainly didn’t hurt either.

Our favorite moment is when our local organic farmer shows up during breakfast with a basket of freshly picked raspberries, basil and tomatoes.  We are fortunate to live in an area where doing the right thing comes as easily as the winter rain!

Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild Innkeepers Come from across the state

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 by Mary Pellegrini
Oregon Innkeepers came from both sides of our fine state. This past week we had the 2009 Annual meeting of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild and every Oregon region was represented. From the Eastern region to the Oregon Coast, from Portland to Crater Lake, the Willamette Valley to Mt Hood and the Columbia River Gorge and of course from Central Oregon where our gathering took place.

The Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild is 88 members strong and counting.  As a professional association of Oregon's individually operated Bed and Breakfast inn, our mission is to assure travelers of consistently high standards in a variety of accommodations.

The annual meeting was held at the Best Western Ponderosa Lodge in beautiful Sisters and we would like to thank Sandy Affonso, innkeeper of the Blue Spruce B&B, for her enthusiasm while planning this event.

Roundtable discussions were ongoing at the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild's Annual MeetingThe Oregon Guild supports our members through networking, advocacy and education.  Workshops included information on our Association programs.  The Green Certification program of the Guild is designed to make sustainable travel a reality in Oregon.  The OBBG blog is written by our innkeepers promoting our inns and our state as a tourist destination and we will provide our members the tools needed for them to become guest bloggers.

Time is always set aside for roundtable discussion with topics from marketing to networking.  From scones to gardening.

A representative from Travel Oregon will present a report on the partnerships between OBBG and the Oregon Tourism Commission (dba Travel Oregon), the Oregon tourism force.  We have partnered with Travel Oregon in promotions such as Oregon Bounty, the Central Cascades GeoTourism Project and Oregon 150

This gathering lasted only a day and a half but our innkeepers return home fueled with enthusiastic ideas to make your stay at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild a truly memorable experience.

"I just love this group... just too much talent..
my brain is strained.... I try too absorb as much as possible..."

Innkeepers Mike & Laura Rech of The Craftsman Bed and Breakfast in Pacific City, Oregon, are taking Green Travel one step farther.

They have always believed in saving the planet and making as small of an impact as they could.

Green is in, so they decided instead of quietly being green, they would promote their green practices.

They are part of the Oregon Bed & Breakfast Guild's Green Inspection Program and are listed with another Green Travel site, istaygreen.org, where they rate 3 leafs.

The Craftsman is offsetting its carbon emissions with Carbonfund.org; the country’s leading nonprofit carbon offset organization. Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree® Partner program is a national movement of businesses and organizations that are leading the fight against global warming.

Their car is even carbon neutral! VW of America and Carbonfund.org are planting the VW Forest. They are offsetting carbon emissions by funding the reforestation of the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley.

They want to help you be green too. You can purchase Green-e certified renewable energy certificates, Green Tags, to help offset the carbon footprint of your travel to The Craftsman B&B. Their Green Tag web page has a chart where you can look up what kind of car you drive and figure out how many Tags would offset your travel.

Green Lodging News, an industry specific e-zine, wrote a story about The Craftsman’s partnerships and practices, click here to read it.

Find out more about The Craftsman’s Green Philosophy on their newly redesigned website.

For their already green inspired guests, they offer discounts for green practices already in use: 10% of a 2 night stay if they arrive on 2 wheels, arrive via Public Transportation or arrive in Hybrid or Bio-fuel car.

Green is the New Black

Monday, February 2, 2009 by Mary Pellegrini

No longer is the day that luxury and pampered attention is the stuff of waste and non-sustainability.  Oregon Bed and Breakfasts, as part of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild, have established a green certification program.

Launched shortly after the 2008 Bed and Breakfast Regional Conference, the pioneers of this program were:

The Blue Plum Inn, in Portland;
Forest Springs in Gresham;
Nob Hill Riverview in Saint Helens;
Sandlake Country Inn near Tillamook;
Belle Pepper's in Joseph:
Old Parkdale Inn in Parkdale.

Other inns are soon to follow ensuring Green stays in every region of Oregon.

Number of State Level Green Programs Now at 16 and Counting
The Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild was recently mentioned in a Hospitality Trends article.  "They are certainly not all uniform and some are managed better than others but the number of state level green lodging programs is increasing.  There are now at least 16 states that have some type of green lodging program".

Next time you want to pamper you and yours without checking your conscience at the door, choose a green inspected Inn of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild
