Wild and Scenic Film Festival in the Amazing Columbia River Gorge

Thursday, August 26, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini

In 2003, riding on years of success protecting the Yuba River, the South Yuba River Citizens League, SYRCL, decided to plan an environmental film festival.  Seven festivals later, the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival is the largest event of its kind in the US.  The goal is to become the premiere environmental film festival in the world.  Each January, screening begins for the most important and inspirational environmental films available today, as well as host a variety of environmental activists, filmmakers, and celebrities. Wild & Scenic® works to inspire audiences to make positive changes for a healthier world.

The On Tour program began in 2004 because of the many requests to share the festival beyond Nevada County. Today Wild & Scenic® On Tour is shown in communities across the United States … reaching over 85 towns and cities in 2008-2009.

With a growing public awareness for the environment, the festival aims to increase this groundswell through inspiring and educational films which hopefully will motivate people to go out and make a difference in their community and around the world.

The Hood River Valley Residents Committee (HRVRC) was formed in 1977 when a few residents gathered to discuss Hood River County's impending attempt to rezone the upper valley into one-acre home sites. Through grass-roots organizing and effort by local citizens, the proposal was rejected. HRVRC was formed.

On August 26th and 27th, the Crag Law Center and the Hood River Valley Residents Committee will be hosting the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival on Tour.

This will be the third time that the Wild & Scenic Film Festival has come to Hood River, Oregon. This year’s films will be shown outdoors in downtown Hood River at The Ruins at Springhouse Cellar. The Ruins, a picturesque amphitheater, are the remains of a historic Hood River distillery.

Sorry for this last minute notice.  Hope you can join us for this inspiring film festival.  Some of the Mt Hood Bed and Breakfast inns of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild still have rooms available.

The Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in Oregon's Wine Country

Monday, August 23, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini
While you are out enjoying and exploring Oregon's Wine Country stop in at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum outside of McMinnville, home of the Spruce Goose.  In March 1990, the current owner of the Spruce Goose, the Disney Corporation, announced that it was closing the exhibit located in Long Beach, Calif. The Aeroclub of Southern California was notified and they immediately began the search for a new home for the Spruce Goose. In 1992, the Evergreen Museum won the bid with a proposal to build a museum around the aircraft and feature it as a central exhibit.

Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in the heart of Oregon's Wine Country

The Evergreen IMAX theater was completed in 2007.  Work began on the space museum building in September 2006.   As of mid-June, 2008, there are now two main large exhibit centers open to the public, consisting of aviation, where the Spruce Goose acts to anchor the other exhibits, and space flight, in another, matching, new large building. The current center of the space flight exhibit building is occupied by the SR-71 'Blackbird', which originally rested under one wing of the Spruce Goose. The museum is reportedly in talks with NASA officials to obtain one of the retired Space Shuttles at some time in the future, Youngberg Hills Vineyard and Inn located in the Wine Country of the Willamette Valleywhen it will become the centerpiece in the space flight exhibit center.  Flight simulators for landing the space shuttle, as well as for Gemini capsule docking and the Lunar Excursion Module moon landing, are available for use by visitors now.

With so much to see and do in Oregon's Willamette Valley Winecountry you'll need to stay a few days.  The Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild has many unique accommodation choices in the Valley, some near McMinnville and the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum.

Sunday, August 22, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini
Hood River Fly-In Nestled in the Hood River valley along the Columbia River Gorge you will find the opportunity to step back in time and see life as it was in the era of early flight and transportation. The Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM) is a living museum dedicated to preserving transportation's golden past. WAAAM honors the memory of early aviators from the first and second war, barnstormers, air mail and early transportation.
Aeronca LC - 1937

We currently have 5 flying with one more being restored in the next year. One of our OX-5 flying aircraft is a very rare and very original 1917 Curtiss JN4D Jenny. This museum fleet includes many other flying antique aircraft making it one of the largest flying in the world today. This museum also brings a unique and rare collection of other Aircraft, Automobiles, Propellers, Aircraft Engines, Aircraft Instruments, Military Jeeps, Tools of War and other interesting artifacts.

The Tillamook Air Museum on the Beautiful Oregon Coast

Saturday, August 21, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini

Tillamook Air Museum is an aviation museum located south of Tillamook, Oregon at Tillamook Airport .  The museum is housed in a former military blimp hangar, called "Hangar B", which is the largest clear-span wooden structure in the world.  The Tillamook Air Museum has been described as "one of the country's top private World War II aircraft collections".

Tillamook Air Museum on the beautiful Oregon Coast

Constructed by the US Navy in 1942 during World War II for Naval Air Station Tillamook, the hangar building housing the aircraft is 1,072 feet long and 296 feet wide, giving it over 6 acres of space. It stands at 192 feet tall. The doors weigh 30 tons each and are 120 feet tall.  Hangar "B" is one of two that were built on the site originally, Hangar "A" was destroyed by fire in 1992.  The Blimps were uses for anti-submarine coast patrol and convoy escort.and since 1994 the remaining hangar has been home to one of the top five privately owned aircraft collections in the nation.

With broad, sandy beaches, an abundance of open space, plenty of authentic Oregon sites and sounds it's no wonder that the Oregon Coast is a popular destination.  But don't go without making a reservation at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild member inn.  The Oregon Coast is a very popular destination and there are nights when a pillow is hard to find.

Culinary Tourism in Strata!

Thursday, August 12, 2010 by Debbie Lusk
Googling the word, "strata," I found that it can mean many things.  A geological formation, the former name of a rock band, it's a recipe and a name of a company!  I'm not sure why this recipe is named "Strata" except that in this photograph, you can kind of see why perhaps because of the way it rises as it's squeezed out of it's perfect boundaries while baking.

This is a very easy recipe and again one of those we have twisted around, added to and played with till we got it right.  Simple, delicious, easy and can be made on a whim!  The perfect breakfast for one or many if multiplied!

My Personal Strata!

-cube 2 slices of any kind of bread.  We love using two different kinds of breads.  A rye and whole grain perhaps, or a sour dough and honey wheat!

-spray a single serving ramekin or small baking dish with olive oil

-lay cubed bread in the dish and up the sides as much as possible

-whip 3 eggs, some basil, a few pepper flakes, salt and pepper and a little milk.  Pour mixture over cubed bread

-sprinkle with chopped onion, cooked turkey bacon or Peppered Canadian Bacon and a little jack cheese with a bit of diced tomato

-Bake at 375 degrees for about 25 minutes

This Strata can be prepared the night before and baked in the morning.  This will give the bread enough time to soak in the egg mixture!

And...depending on the season, change it up!  I love going to my garden and getting some Thai Basil or fresh tomatoes to use as well as using local cheese's when I have them on hand.  Sweet corn is a nice addition too!

Check out this link to our "Breakfast Experience" on our OBBG website when you are thinking about checking in to one of our Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild membership inns!

See you soon!

A very "GREEN" vacation!

Tuesday, August 10, 2010 by Debbie Lusk
We love being "green!"  We love preserving our natural resources, we love the word, "sustainable" and we love experiencing all of this in the natural beauty that surrounds each of us living in or visiting the great "green" state of Oregon!

Not only are we on the forefront of all that exudes "green," we are and have been the example to the rest of the country that if you wanna be green, you have to learn from the best!  Riding our bikes, using public transportation, conserving, recycling, you name it, we are doing it, re-creating it or sharing it!

And, for some of us, we love "experiencing" being green too!  Filling our "re-usable" water bottles with our perfect tap water, we headed out for our hiking adventure on a trail near Mary's Peak!  About 20 miles out of Philomath near Corvallis is where we began our trek yesterday.

We only had a few hours before our guests were arriving so we headed out and up the trail to Mary's Peak by noon!  It was a gorgeous day but all I could think about was getting my exercise in and getting as far as possible up the trail before heading back down.  Taking a few people "new to Oregon" with us, was exciting.  We love showing off this awesome place and couldn't wait to start walking.  About half way through our walk, someone said, "wow...this place is really green!"  I almost laughed cause if I had a dollar for every time someone said that to me...well...you know how that goes.  But hearing again those words, I had to slow down and take it all in!  I looked up and saw the magnificant trees stretching toward the sun.  I saw each wild flower and thought about how perfect each petal is.  I saw water falls, I stepped over the biggest slug I have ever seen and sat long enough to watch a spider weave her web.

Over two hours later and still not sure how far we got up the mountain, but we met some great people on the trail, pet some nice dogs and will take more time next trip to make it to the "peak!"

If you are visiting Oregon and want a true "green" experience, check out our trails!  Pack your camel packs, your lunch and your sun screen and get your hiking boots and get going!

Don't forget to stop and smell the flowers and experience Oregon's green!

See you on the trail!

Cherries, Cherries, and More Cherries ~ We Just Can't Get Enough

Sunday, August 8, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini

The 2010 Hood River cherry crop is amazing.  We have been picking about 10 pounds of fresh cherries every few days and they become the main ingredient in many a tasty breakfast treat here at the Old Parkdale Inn.  We’ve been making cherry crepes, cherry scones, cherry cobblers and of course placing big bowls of cold, crisp cherries on the table to nibble on before, during and after breakfast.

One of our guests’ favorite though, is the Double-Crust Cherry Tart and as promised here is the recipe.

Double-Crust Cherry Tart1 cup (1/2 lb.) butter, room temperature
2 large egg yolks
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup yellow cornmeal
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 pounds fresh cherries, rinsed and pitted
2 Tbs. quick-tapioca
1 Tbs. lemon juice

In a bowl, with a mixer on medium speed, beat butter with 3/4 cup sugar until smooth. Beat in egg yolks.  Stir in flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt until will blended.  Divide dough in half.  Press one portion over bottom and up sides to rim of a 9-inch tart pan with removable rim.  Place other portion on a lightly floured piece of waxed paper.  Set aside.

In another bowl, mix cherries, tapioca, lemon juice and remaining 1/4 cup sugar.  Let stand for 10 minutes as you roll out second portion of dough with a lightly floured rolling pin into a 10-inch round.

Pour cherries into tart shell.  Invert round over cherries.  Press edges into rim of tart pan, pinching off any excess.  Sprinkle tart lightly with sugar.
Place tart pan on a baking sheet and bake on the lower rack of a 375 degree over until top is golden brown, about 35-40 minutes.

Cherries are finding their way to the breakfast tables of the member inns of the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild in Hood River and the Columbia River Gorge.  Make your reservation today and see what culinary delight they're cooking up.

A Labor of Love ~ The Gardens of the Apple Inn Bed and Breakfast

Friday, August 6, 2010 by Mary Pellegrini

Kathe McIntire
Apple Inn Bed and Breakfast
Cottage Grove, Oregon

It was determined by Kathe in 2001 that a project that required physical labor and exercise was in order. So the garden at the Apple Inn B&B began.

The Apple Inn Garden Story

The Apple Inn Bed and Breakfast in Cottage Grove, Oregon"I discovered a delightful yard next door to my daughters family in Creswell and in my curiosity was leaning over the fence and gawking when the lady of the house came home. She gave me the tour and the name of guy who had designed and created her special yard. Nolan Blansit became my designer and drew a plan that even a novice could use.

"The summer was spent in digging up the beds and discarding mountains of sticky clay soil in favor of purchasing soil that plants would actually like to live in. Then the adventure of visiting every nursery I could find in order to purchase the hundreds of plants on my plan. Fall arrived and each day after teaching school I would come home to my raingear and plant until dark. I measured according to the plan and put plants that had little appearance of life in the ground. A thankless job it seemed as I had little idea of what these lumps of dirt with little sticks on top would actually look like. No mulch this first year as I was out of time and money and energy.

The Gardens of the Apple Inn Bed and Breakfast in Cottage Grove, Oregon
"Then spring began and there was green attached to the little sticks and I could not wait to wake up, grab a cup of coffee and see what was appearing in my dirt each morning. It was like Christmas everyday for the whole growing season and I was dragging everyone who would allow it out to the garden to see the little plants grow and bloom.

"The garden has evolved and changed over the last 9 years. Some transplanting and of course dividing has changed the plan some. Pruning is now a full time event when years ago I would never have thought to cut anything as there was not enough to spare. I have ventured out from the original plan and added and subtracted where it seemed a good idea. It was not always a good idea but it was my idea and labor and my garden so there you go.

"I am limited by the great amount of shade that our forest setting provides so there do not get to be many sun loving plants in the plan. When I add plants I am learning to read the label and look for shade to part sun so I am not killing the poor choices.

The Apple Inn Bed and Breakfast in Cottage Grove, Oregon
"I enjoy the work and challenge of the landscape and even though I get tired of the weeds, I get satisfaction from removing them and hoping they are gone for good. (ha!) I have learned to mulch and mulch and mulch. It makes my plants happy and comfy and irritates the weeds a little. I have learned to have trucks bring large loads of soil and mulch and dump them in big piles where I can wheel them to their new destination. These piles are handy for those impulsive days when I decide to make a change, move a plant, or create something different. I have learned to feed the plants and water them more, they like me better for it. Soaker hoses and a watering system needed to appear in this plan early on. My husband is really good at repairing the hoses as I manage to chop them in pieces when I make my impulsive changes. And there are the deer. I have learned that some plants must be placed in pots on the deck or they are just going to be dinner. I have learned to plant some things the deer like close to the fence in hopes that it will keep them busy and they will leave the others alone. (ha!) I have learned to find plants that the deer don’t like so much.  I enjoy my garden and love to share it with others, just not the deer, gophers and voles!"

Imagine yourself relaxing in the gardens of the Apple Inn Bed and Breakfast in Cottage Grove, Oregon

The Lara House and Airlie Farm...our two newest members!

Wednesday, August 4, 2010 by Debbie Lusk
Airlie FarmThe Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild strives to bring our guests the highest quality possible when it comes to our membership inns!  And, lately it hasn't been that hard to do!

Two newly inspected inn's to the guild are the Lara House Lodge and Airlie Farm. The Lara House Lodge is located in Bend, Oregon and sits on slight knoll on a corner and Airlie Farm sits perfectly on a few acres in horse country near Monmouth, Oregon!  Great locations for both inns!  Winter and summer activities in Bend so if you are visiting, you will never wonder what there is to do!  Snowmobiling and skiing in the winter and Lava Tube exploring and ATVing in the Summer.  Now in Monmouth, if you have never been to that area, it is a situation worth staying for.

Airlie Farm just so happens to be near Corvallis and OSU and some of the best wineries in the entire Willamette Valley.  One of our personal favs?...Left Coast Cellars

And as per our usual, each inn offers the best in breakfasts as well.  Gourmet, fresh and local, the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild inn's strive to bring the best of the Oregon countryside to each breakfast table!

Staying in Oregon this summer or planning an Autumn road trip...check out the Lara House in Bend or Airlie Farm in Monmouth!

A warm welcome from "your" guild and we are so happy to have you aboard!
